Back in August, I had the pleasure of being interviewed by a reporter from Neurology Today about the Mediterranean lifestyle. It got me thinking about the true essence of this lifestyle beyond just the famous diet. The Mediterranean lifestyle is not just a fad diet; it's a way of life—a sustainable practice that promotes overall health and well-being. So today, I want to share with you five key aspects of the Mediterranean lifestyle that go beyond the diet.

Follow the Mediterranean Diet

Growing up in a Mediterranean household, I had the privilege of enjoying a variety of fresh and wholesome foods. After-school snacks consisted of fresh vegetables, raw nuts, or a bowl of lentil soup. Twice a week, we indulged in delicious fish or seafood dishes, often accompanied by rice, grains, and a fresh chopped salad. While we did enjoy treats like baklava, we also opted for healthier dessert choices such as fresh fruit or dried fruit.

The Mediterranean diet is not a restrictive one. In fact, it embraces a wide variety of foods. If you take a closer look at the Mediterranean food pyramid, you'll notice a focus on grains, vegetables, dairy, fiber, lean proteins, and olive oil—the main source of fat in this diet. And yes, you'll also be glad to know that a moderate amount of wine is allowed!

Be with Family. Share with Loved Ones

One of the beautiful aspects of the Mediterranean lifestyle is the emphasis on shared meals and quality time with loved ones. When we gather around the table with family and friends, we naturally tend to eat more mindfully and at a slower pace, avoiding overeating. Beyond mealtime, the Mediterranean culture encourages a well-balanced social life and a deep connection with the people who matter to us.

Move Naturally

Contrary to popular belief, Mediterranean people do not spend hours at the gym. Instead, they embrace natural movement as part of their daily lives. This can include manual labor, climbing stairs, and walking for daily activities such as commuting or shopping. While maintaining an active gym routine is commendable, incorporating moderate exercise like a daily walk can be a sustainable and effective way to stay healthy.

Laugh Often

Laughter truly is the best medicine, and Mediterranean people know it. With their big personalities and humor-filled conversations, they prioritize joy and positivity in life. Taking life seriously is important, but approaching it with a light-hearted and joyful attitude can make all the difference.

Live (More) Simply

One defining characteristic of the Mediterranean lifestyle is the simplicity of living. People in Mediterranean countries, compared to their counterparts in more affluent nations, tend to have fewer possessions and prioritize stewardship. They buy only what they need and appreciate the value of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. Recipes like fattoush and paella showcase their resourcefulness and creativity in minimizing waste and maximizing flavor.

Ultimately, the Mediterranean lifestyle is about more than just the diet. It's a holistic approach to life that emphasizes balance, connection, and simplicity. While these five basics offer a glimpse into this way of life, there are countless other positive practices out there that can enhance our well-being. I encourage you to explore and share your own experiences with adopting a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle.
