The Loewe Basket Bag has been catching my eye for years. It seemed to be everywhere, from Instagram to editorials and even on my travels. I have a soft spot for straw bags, so I treat myself to one or two every summer. They are versatile and perfect for the warmer months. One summer, I decided to splurge and purchase the Loewe Basket Bag, and I'm here to share my honest thoughts about it.

Loewe Basket Bag Review: Is It Worth It?

After using the bag for a few weeks, I must say that I really like it. One unique feature is the lack of closure, which can be seen as both a pro and a con. On one hand, it's incredibly roomy and easy to access your belongings. However, on the downside, things can easily roll out of the bag if you're not careful.

The bag is spacious and can fit everything you need for the beach, office, or a weekend outing. It's a single compartment without any pockets or separators, allowing for maximum storage. Initially, I was concerned that the bag might look too boxy against my frame, but as the raffia softens with wear, it looks effortlessly chic on the shoulder or wrist.

Determining if the Loewe Basket Bag is worth it depends on your personal collection, needs, and budget. However, if you're looking for a practical yet elevated summer bag that won't go out of style, then it's definitely a winner.

Size

The Loewe Basket Bag is available in three sizes: small, medium, and large. I opted for the medium size, and I'm extremely happy with it. The dimensions are 10.6" tall x 14.6" wide x 6.7" deep, with comfortable 9" drop straps for shoulder or hand carrying. The bottom is slightly flat, but it takes a bit of "training" to prevent it from leaning when set down.

Size Comparison

If you're unsure about which size to choose, here are the dimensions of each:

  • Small: 7.9" height, 11.8" width, 5.1" depth, with a 6.3" strap drop
  • Medium: 10.6" height, 14.6" width, 6.7" depth, with a 9" strap drop
  • Large: 13.4" height, 18.1" width, 8.3" depth, with a 9" strap drop

What Fits Inside

The medium-sized Loewe Basket Bag can hold a surprising amount of items. I comfortably fit my wallet, sunglasses and case, keys, phone, small notebook, laptop, small water bottle, snack, tech case with chargers, and a small zip pouch for makeup. There's even space for a light sweater on top, and still room for more.

Design, Features, Materials, and Quality

When it comes to woven bags, it's important to keep in mind that the materials are prone to imperfections. Overall, I'm satisfied with the quality of the Loewe Basket Bag, but upon unboxing, I did notice a few loose threads and color variations. Although they are not noticeable to others, considering the price, I was expecting perfection.

The raffia material of the bag is sturdy, and the weave is beautiful. However, it's worth noting that woven bags, especially those with larger threads like this one, may develop pills over time. My other Loewe tote with a tighter weave did not have the same issues.

The leather straps and embossed logo patch are flawless, and the stitching is impeccable. It's the attention to detail and the leather accents that make the Loewe Basket Bag stand out from other woven styles in the market.

Pros and Cons

Let's take a look at the pros and cons of the Loewe Basket Bag:

Pros:

  • The medium size is just right, not too big and not too small.
  • It's incredibly roomy and can fit all your daily essentials and more.
  • The raffia softens with wear, making the bag more comfortable to carry.
  • The quality of the leather straps and logo patch is excellent.

Cons:

  • Everything tends to spill out if you lean over, so be mindful when bending down.
  • The raffia material can snag, so be cautious if you wear delicate fabrics.
  • The bag comes with a hefty price tag.

Loewe Bag Lookalikes

If the price of the Loewe Basket Bag is a bit steep for your budget, fear not! There are some stunning lookalikes available at a fraction of the cost.

Poolside Essaouria Tote

My number one recommendation for a Loewe bag lookalike is the Poolside Essaouria Tote because I actually own it. It comes in different sizes, and the medium size is similar in dimensions to the Loewe Basket Bag. Apart from the logo patch, it looks almost identical.

The main differences are that the Loewe Bag is sturdier overall, with less give in the leather and raffia, while the Poolside tote comes with a zippered insert to keep your items secure. The Poolside tote is an excellent alternative at half the cost of the Loewe basket!

Other Loewe Bag Lookalikes

There are a few other brands that offer Loewe-inspired straw totes at lower price points:

  • Mango Straw Totes: Mango releases a variety of straw totes each season at around $100, like their leather tote, long handle tote, and removable strap tote.
  • Sezane Bags: This French retailer offers a range of straw totes in the $100-250 range every season, providing beautiful alternatives to Loewe.
  • Etsy Shops: There are numerous Etsy shops that carry straw bags, and after some research, I found one that offers Loewe lookalikes that are strikingly similar and priced under $100.

So, whether you decide to splurge on the Loewe Basket Bag or opt for a more affordable alternative, you'll be able to enjoy the effortlessly chic style of a woven straw bag.
