Do you ever come across a fashion trend that initially makes you raise an eyebrow and question its appeal? Well, I certainly have, and the latest trend to catch my attention is the balaclava. You may have seen it all over TikTok and wondered if you could actually pull it off. Trust me, I was skeptical too.

Throughout my fashion journey, I've learned that some trends take time to grow on you. I recall despising kitten heels, pointed-toe shoes, and even ripped jeans when they first emerged in the fashion scene. However, now you can find me confidently rocking a pair of pointed-toe kitten heels with jeans so ripped that even my dad questions my fashion choices. The lesson I've learned is simple: don't knock it until you've tried it. With a bit of confidence and a "What Would Carrie Bradshaw Wear?" mentality, anything can be made to look cool.

Now, in case you're unfamiliar with the term, a balaclava is a knitted cap that covers the head and neck. Some balaclavas conceal everything but the eyes, while others resemble a hood, leaving most of your face exposed. Interestingly, balaclavas gained popularity during the Crimean War in 1854 when British troops used them to protect their faces from the freezing cold. Talk about a useful accessory!

I must admit it's taken me 168 years to embrace this trend fully. Oh, how I wish I had discovered the balaclava sooner and spared my poor skin from the harsh New York winters. But here's the thing: balaclavas offer not only functionality but also style. Designers like Raf Simons have been showcasing knitted headwear on the runway since 2018, and their popularity has only grown since then. In fact, Simons' original balaclava design now comes with a hefty $800 price tag on Grailed.

Thankfully, retailers with more reasonable prices have started including balaclavas in their winter accessory collections. As a self-proclaimed balaclava advocate, I wasted no time in purchasing affordable options from Zara and Target. After trying them out on coffee dates and daily outings, I can confidently confirm that they are incredible. Plus, they provide the added bonus of allowing me to step out with wet hair and no makeup while still looking stylish.
