Following the enormous success of its sunscreen in 2022, K-beauty brand Beauty of Joseon has launched a sunscreen stick version of its viral product. With the Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics Sunscreen being hailed as the best Korean sunscreen of 2022 on Reddit, can Beauty of Joseon replicate the same level of success with its newly released Matte Sun Stick: Mugwort+Camelia? In this article, I will review the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick and provide my insights.

I previously reviewed the Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics Sunscreen, and I must admit, I wasn't a fan. But let's see if the Matte Sun Stick can change my opinion.

About Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick: Mugwort+Camelia

Released in January 2023, the Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick: Mugwort+Camelia is set to be immensely popular this year, as sunscreens, especially Korean sunscreens and sunsticks, are trending in the skincare industry.

For the development of the Matte Sun Stick, Beauty of Joseon collaborated with Ramon Pagan, a cosmetic chemist and social media influencer known as @glowbyramon on Instagram, TikTok, and Youtube. With a Master's of Science in Cosmetic Sciences, Ramon brought his expertise to the creation of this product.

Unlike other popular Korean sunscreens manufactured by Kolmar Korea, the Matte Sun Stick is produced by CosMax, one of the world's largest cosmetics manufacturers.

Ramon has mentioned in his Youtube video that he aimed to create an inclusive and accessible sunstick. As a result, the Matte Sun Stick is non-comedogenic and free from ingredients that may cause issues for some users, such as niacinamide.

Purchasing Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick: Mugwort+Camelia

The Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick: Mugwort+Camelia is sold as part of a set with the brand's Glow Drop Serum. I purchased this set, called the Beauty of Joseon Glow + Sun Set, from the official Beauty of Joseon e-shop on Lazada for SGD$33.00, inclusive of delivery from South Korea.

My Review of Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick: Mugwort+Camelia

Sunscreen Coverage:

  • UVB: SPF 50+
  • UVA: PA ++++

Sunscreen Filters:

  • Chemical Filters: Uvinul A Plus, Tinosorb S, Uvinul T 150, Polysilicone-15

Notable Ingredients and Features:

  • Turmeric: Known for its anti-inflammatory and potential skin lightening properties.
  • Mugwort: Trending in Korean skincare with potential antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Camellia: Contains phenolic acids with antioxidant benefits.
  • Centella Asiatica: Also known as Cica, a popular ingredient in Korean skincare.
  • Green Tea: A well-known ingredient in Asian skincare with various benefits.
  • Hyaluronic Acid: A moisturizing ingredient found in many skincare products.
  • Neem: Has shown potential in improving wound healing due to its antibacterial properties.

The Good

The Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick: Mugwort+Camelia is a broad-spectrum sunstick that offers high protection against UVA and UVB rays. Unlike other sunsticks, it feels light on the skin and leaves almost a matte finish, without any white cast. The texture is smooth and doesn't cause irritation or acne breakouts.

The Bad

I find the inclusion of turmeric in the Matte Sun Stick puzzling. While turmeric may have some lightening effects on hyperpigmentation, the evidence for this benefit is limited. It would be more logical to use other active ingredients with better evidence, such as vitamin C.

Furthermore, the product transfer is minimal, and it requires multiple glides to get enough product on the skin, which can be inconvenient. The sunstick tends to clump during application, making it challenging to estimate the amount of sunscreen applied.

Verdict

The Beauty of Joseon Matte Sun Stick: Mugwort+Camelia is a sunstick with broad-spectrum protection, a light feel, and an almost matte finish. It is recommended for reapplying sunscreen throughout the day, especially for users with oily or acne-prone skin. However, due to the poor product transfer and clumping, I prefer using it as an additional layer of sunscreen rather than as my primary sunscreen.
