The Adidas Terrex Swift R2 is a burly, rugged, and reliable trail shoe designed to conquer long hikes and backpacking trips. I've put this shoe through its paces over the past few months, and in this review, I will share my experiences and insights.

Fit and Feel:

When I first slipped on the Adidas Terrex Swift R2, I was taken aback by its stiffness. This shoe is built on a boarded last, which offers unparalleled stability and protection. Unlike most trail running shoes that use a strobel last, the Swift R2's boarded last provides a solid platform for tackling demanding terrains. It took me some miles to break them in and experience true comfort.

Sizing and Weight: I wear a size 12, and the Swift R2 fits true to size. However, it is worth noting that this shoe is on the heavier side, weighing 16.5oz per shoe. If you're accustomed to lightweight trail running shoes, the weight may take some getting used to. Nevertheless, the weight distribution is excellent, offering ample protection throughout the upper, midsole, and outsole. When traversing rugged trails or carrying heavy loads, the Swift R2's stability is a welcome advantage.

Heel and Midfoot:

The Swift R2's heel features generous padding and an external plastic counter. Initially, I experienced some heel slip, but as the midsole broke in, this issue gradually diminished. The midfoot of the Swift R2 accommodates slightly wider feet comfortably. The laces attach to the three Adidas stripes and a forefoot anchor, ensuring a secure fit and providing exceptional lateral stability.

Toebox: The toebox and forefoot of the Swift R2 may feel tight initially due to the reinforced toe area and guard. However, as the shoe breaks in, the upper materials loosen up. The forefoot offers average volume, and I have yet to experience any hot spots or blisters during long hikes.

Upper Performance:

The Swift R2's upper is constructed with thick ripstop nylon, making it incredibly durable and abrasion-resistant. However, this material tends to retain heat, which can be uncomfortable on warmer days. While the shoe's burly upper does not drain well and dries slowly when submerged in water, it effectively protects against sharp rocks, sand, dirt, and debris. This feature sets it apart from other low-cut trail shoes.

The Swift R2 boasts a speed lace system similar to Salomon's, offering flawless performance on every hike. The tongue is padded and fully gusseted, effectively keeping out dirt and debris. The laces attach to three plastic bands around the midfoot and a forefoot anchor, providing lateral stability without causing any pressure points or hotspots.

Midsole Performance:

Featuring a full-length boarded last, the Swift R2 offers exceptional stability and protection. The board, which is as hard as a thin sheet of wooden particle board, shields the feet from sharp rocks and rugged terrains. Underneath the boarded last lies a dense layer of compression molded EVA, providing a stable and responsive ride. The midsole may feel too stiff for faster hikes and trail running, but it excels on long treks and when carrying heavy packs.

The Swift R2's torsional rigidity and stability are second to none, making it my top choice when hiking with my 35lbs 2-year-old. Its ability to handle heavy loads comfortably and safely is unmatched by other trail shoes I own.

Outsole Performance:

The outsole of the Swift R2 is a standout feature. It boasts aggressive L-shaped lugs that provide excellent traction on sand, mud, gravel, and rocky surfaces. The large surface area of the lugs ensures a secure grip, even in challenging terrains. Adidas Terrex upgraded the Swift R2's Traxion rubber to a superior Continental rubber outsole, known for its remarkable durability. I've put these outsoles to the test on various surfaces and have never lost my footing.

Closing Thoughts:

For a price of $115, the Adidas Swift R2 offers excellent value. If you're in search of a low-cut trail shoe that provides the stability of a hiking boot, the Swift R2 is the perfect choice. While the upper may retain heat and lack efficient drainage, the bombproof midsole and aggressive outsole more than compensate for these minor drawbacks. I can only hope that Adidas Terrex releases a version of the Swift R2 with an open mesh upper. This would enhance breathability and reduce weight, making it the ultimate shoe for avid adventurers like myself.
