Hoka continues to impress with their latest release, the Hoka Clifton 8. As an avid runner, I fell in love with the Clifton 7, and I'm happy to report that the Clifton 8 lives up to its predecessor's reputation. This shoe offers a luxurious and comfortable experience for your legs, making it an excellent choice for daily trainers.

Who Should Buy the Hoka Clifton 8?

Are you searching for a daily trainer that provides a plush and soft underfoot feel with a smooth transition? Look no further than the Hoka Clifton 8. Whether you need a recovery day shoe or a companion for long-distance slow runs, the Clifton 8 is a fantastic option. With its focus on comfort, stability, plushness, and affordability, priced at $130, the Clifton 8 is the perfect choice.

However, there are a few scenarios where the Clifton 8 may not be the best fit for you. If you're seeking a speed shoe for tempo runs, I recommend checking out the Hoka Mach 4. For hot summer days, you may prefer a shoe that offers more breathability, such as the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2. Finally, if you're in the market for a carbon-plated race shoe, the Hoka Rocket X is your best bet. The Clifton 8 is like a luxury cruiser, delivering a comfortable and enjoyable ride, but it's not built for speed.

Clifton 8: A Spacious Fit

The Clifton 8 offers a true-to-size fit, but be aware that it is a voluminous shoe. If you have low volume or narrow feet, I recommend trying it out before making a purchase. Personally, I transitioned from the Clifton 7s in 2E wide to the standard D width for the Clifton 8, and the fit was great. The stretchy nature of the mesh material allows for a comfortable and accommodating experience. While the forefoot measures slightly narrower than average, the Clifton 8 still offers ample room for a comfortable fit.

Unmatched Comfort

Comfort is the defining feature of the Hoka Clifton series, and the Clifton 8 takes it to the next level. These shoes treat your legs and feet to an unparalleled level of comfort. With 33.7mm of Hoka foam under the heels and a thick 5mm insole, the Clifton 8 provides a plush and cushioned experience. The midsole is slightly softer than its predecessor, enhancing the shoe's plush feeling without sacrificing its signature bouncy personality and smooth rolling transition. Additionally, the upper is padded to provide extra comfort, although it may run a bit warm.

A Smooth Ride

The Hoka Clifton 8 offers a smooth and effortless ride. Its rockered design allows for a seamless transition throughout your gait and stride, while the wide platform ensures stability with every step. Although the midsole feels softer than its predecessor, it's important to note that the Clifton 8 is not a speed shoe. It's designed for daily training, long runs, and recovery days, offering endless miles of soft and comfortable running.

Durability and Performance

The Clifton 8 is built to last. With its tank-like construction, this shoe can easily withstand 500 miles of running. The generous amount of foam underfoot maintains its shape and resists premature packing out. Moreover, the 3mm thick, 81HC hard rubber outsole patches ensure long-lasting wear. While the Clifton 8's grip is adequate, it's worth mentioning that the shoe's breathability has decreased compared to its predecessor. The tongue feels thicker, resulting in slightly reduced ventilation.

Lockdown and Other Features

Lockdown is excellent in the Clifton 8, thanks to Hoka's stretchy semi-gusseted tongue. This feature provides great support over the top of your foot and throughout the midfoot. The thick tongue, although a challenge to tighten super tight, does not compromise the shoe's performance. Slippage and hot spots are not a concern, ensuring a comfortable running experience. Additionally, the Clifton 8's elf tab on the heel adds a touch of uniqueness, and the reflective elements make it ideal for night runners. Finally, this shoe performs admirably in cold weather, maintaining its plush softness.

In conclusion, the Hoka Clifton 8 is a top-notch daily trainer that continues to dominate the market. With its unmatched comfort, smooth ride, and durability, this shoe is a reliable choice for runners of all levels. Whether you're a casual jogger or a seasoned marathoner, the Clifton 8 will provide the comfort and support you need to conquer your runs.
