Are you an outdoor enthusiast looking for the perfect hiking shoes? Look no further than the Salomon Speedcross series. In this review, we'll dive into the features and benefits of these shoes, based on my personal experience walking the Camino Frances with the Speedcross 5 version. So, let's get started!

Choosing to Go Trail Runner

When it comes to selecting between trail runners and hiking boots, the decision is a personal one. For long-distance hikes like the French Way or the Camino Frances, I highly recommend trail runners or lightweight hiking boots. The Salomon Speedcross series is an excellent choice for such adventures.

Fit of the Salomon Speedcross Series

One common issue with the earlier versions of the Speedcross series was their slim fit, which often led to blisters. However, the Salomon Speedcross 5 has been redesigned based on user feedback. They are now wider and more suitable for people with bigger feet. Women who still face fit issues with the women's Speedcross may want to try the men's version.

The best way to determine if the Salomon Speedcross shoes are right for you is to try them on yourself. Remember to try them on in the evening or late afternoon when your feet are slightly swollen, mimicking the conditions of hiking.

Finish, Material, and Features

The Salomon Speedcross shoes come in two versions: one with Gore-Tex technology and one without. Personally, I prefer the model without Gore-Tex for its better ventilation and the fact that waterproofing is not essential for low shoes.

The shoes feature Contra Grip technology on the sole, providing excellent traction on various terrains. The upper material is a blend of solid and mesh synthetic material, allowing for quick drying and breathability. The insoles are of high quality, but if you require more cushioning, consider upgrading to the blue SuperFeet insoles.

Grip on Trail and in Cities

The Salomon Speedcross shoes are known for their aggressive tread pattern, providing excellent grip on grass, forest floors, and muddy terrains. However, on older city streets or wet surfaces, the shoes may be a bit slippery due to the larger tread pattern. So, it's advisable to exercise caution in such situations.

Once you hit the hiking trails and modern asphalt roads, you can trust the grip of the Speedcross shoes without any worries.

Comfort on the Trail

Comfort is always a top priority for long-distance hikers, and the Salomon Speedcross 5 delivers on that front. With its cushioning for road walking, excellent grip on hiking trails, and lightweight design, these shoes are a true joy to wear. I combined them with hiking sticks for added support and had a fantastic experience throughout the entire Camino Frances, with only one blister due to my own sock mishap.

Have fun

Conclusion

The Salomon Speedcross series offers the perfect blend of comfort, durability, and functionality for your hiking adventures. They are reasonably priced, weighing in at around 320 grams, making them an ideal choice for on-trail explorations. So, if you're looking to upgrade your hiking shoes, give the Salomon Speedcross a try - your feet will thank you!
