Every few years, Salomon rocks the hiking shoe market with a revamped version of their popular X Ultra line. And in spring 2021, they did it again with the release of the X Ultra 4 GTX. This latest iteration builds upon the success of its predecessors, featuring a sleeker design, updated lacing system, and improved fit. As an avid hiker and outdoor enthusiast, I had the pleasure of testing the low-top Gore-Tex variation of this shoe, and let me tell you, it did not disappoint.

Unparalleled Comfort

When it comes to long-distance hikes and ambitious day trips, the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX is in a league of its own. It offers an impressive level of comfort, comparable to that of a reinforced trail runner. Right out of the box, the shoe feels flexible and cozy. The soft cushioning around the collar and tongue provides a plush feel, while the ample padding underfoot offers excellent support, even when navigating technical terrain. The shoe's firm EVA foam also does an exceptional job of absorbing impacts.

It's worth noting that the X Ultra 4 isn't as soft and squishy as a traditional trail runner. However, its long-distance comfort is still exceptional, making it an excellent choice even for thru-hikers. What sets it apart is the added protection it offers. With reinforced areas around the toes and heels, the X Ultra 4 provides superior defense against rocks and accidental kicks. Plus, the stretchy material along the top of the shoe keeps dirt and debris out while maintaining flexibility. Paired with the single-pull Quicklace system, it ensures a secure and comfortable fit.

Lightweight and Agile

Weighing in at just 1 pound 10 ounces (men's size 9), the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX is impressively lightweight. In comparison to other popular hiking shoe models on the market, it holds its ground against heavier contenders. The low weight of the X Ultra 4 adds to its overall agility and nimbleness on the trail. You'll feel like you're wearing a trail runner, but with the added benefits of support and protection.

Superior Traction

When it comes to traction, the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX does not disappoint. The shoe features Salomon's proprietary Contagrip outsole, which offers excellent grip on a variety of surfaces. Whether you're dealing with soft terrain or traversing rocky paths, the chevron-shaped lugs will provide the traction you need. They bite into the ground, preventing slips and providing a secure footing. Even on wet rocks, the X Ultra 4 offers dependable grip, ensuring your safety during steep descents.

Stability and Support for All Your Adventures

The X Ultra 4 stands out with its revamped chassis, which strikes an excellent balance between weight reduction and stability. The shoe has a wider base that provides a solid and planted feel, making it ideal for tackling rough terrain. Whether you're crossing rocky creek beds or traversing steep and root-covered trails, you can rely on the X Ultra 4 to provide stability and support. Additionally, the shoe offers flexibility towards the front, ensuring a smooth and athletic feel during quick hikes on flat ground.

Another notable feature is the winged eyelet that connects the lacing system to the midsole. This innovative design reinforces ankle support and prevents rolling, enhancing overall stability. Combined with the secure fit provided by the Quicklace system, the X Ultra 4 offers an excellent balance of support and agility.

Waterproof and Reliable

The X Ultra 4 GTX boasts impressive waterproofing capabilities, thanks to its water-resistant upper and Gore-Tex liner. During my extensive testing in various weather conditions, the shoe proved its reliability. The synthetic material with a durable water repellent (DWR) coating effectively sheds light moisture, keeping your feet dry in light rain and snow. The Gore-Tex liner ensures that no water seeps in, providing reliable protection even in wet conditions.

Breathability and Build Quality

Due to extensive testing during colder months, I haven't had the chance to fully assess the X Ultra 4 GTX's breathability. However, it's worth noting that Gore-Tex shoes tend to run warmer. The synthetic upper material is relatively thin, and the low-top design ensures better airflow compared to a full boot. However, I suspect that the shoe might become warm during hotter summer months. If breathability is a priority for you, consider the non-waterproof version of the X Ultra 4.

When it comes to build quality and durability, the X Ultra 4 doesn't disappoint. Salomon is renowned for its attention to detail and long-lasting products, and the X Ultra 4 is no exception. The outsole wears down evenly, even after rigorous use on challenging terrain. The multi-piece upper, while not as white as it was out of the box, is still in excellent condition. The X Ultra 4 is a reliable companion that will stand up to your adventures.

Salomon's Signature Quicklace System

The X Ultra 4 GTX features Salomon's renowned Quicklace system, a user-friendly lacing mechanism that ensures a secure fit with a single pull of the cord. The convenience of the Quicklace system is unbeatable. It provides an evenly distributed cinch and tucks away neatly into a pocket on the tongue. Unlike traditional laces, the X Ultra 4's Quicklace system doesn't require frequent readjustments, providing hassle-free hiking.

While the Quicklace system offers many advantages, it may not be suitable for everyone. Customizing the fit in specific areas is not possible with this system, which may be a drawback for some hikers. It's also important to note that although the Quicklace system is well-made and durable, repairs in the field can be challenging if it malfunctions. However, for most hikers, the Quicklace system provides a quick and secure fit that will enhance their overall hiking experience.

Fit and Sizing - Roomy and Versatile

Compared to its predecessor, the X Ultra 3, the X Ultra 4 offers a roomier and higher-volume fit in the toe box. This enhancement is a welcomed improvement for hikers with wider feet or those who prefer more wiggle room. However, if you have narrow feet or enjoyed the snug fit of the X Ultra 3, you may find the X Ultra 4 to be initially disappointing. That being said, the shoe still offers a locked-in feel around the heel, ensuring stability during climbs. Salomon also offers wide sizes for those who need extra width, making the X Ultra 4 more versatile than ever.

Explore the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX Family

Apart from the men's low-top, Gore-Tex variation I tested, the Salomon X Ultra 4 also offers a women's equivalent that shares the same features and performance. However, it's worth noting that our female testers experienced some fit issues and rubbing from the plastic Quicklace toggle. While not everyone will have the same experience, it's important to take it into consideration. If you prefer breathability or prioritize a quick drying time, the non-waterproof version of the X Ultra 4 is available at a lower price point.

Salomon also offers a mid-height Gore-Tex version for those seeking additional protection and coverage. This model comes at a slightly higher weight and cost but provides extra support for challenging trails. Additionally, the X Ultra 4 Mid Winter is a cold-weather-ready model, featuring 200-gram Thinsulate insulation, a gaiter hook, and a retooled outsole designed for colder temperatures.

Why We Love the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX

There are multiple reasons why the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX stands out among its competitors:

  • Exceptional lightweight performance: The X Ultra 4 strikes the perfect balance between comfort, grip, and support. It feels light and athletic, making it ideal for long-distance hikes.
  • Agile and nimble: Despite its aggressive and stable build, the X Ultra 4 maintains its agility on the trail, allowing you to move quickly and confidently.
  • Superior protection and stability: The X Ultra 4 offers reliable protection for rough terrains and delivers excellent stability, making it a versatile option for all types of hikes.
  • Secure fit: The innovative winged eyelet and Quicklace system work together to provide a secure and customized fit for your hikes.
  • Built to last: Salomon is known for its exceptional build quality and longevity, and the X Ultra 4 lives up to that reputation.

Areas for Improvement

While the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX is an outstanding hiking shoe, here are a few areas that may not suit everyone:

  • The single-pull Quicklace system may not be suitable for those who prefer to customize the fit in specific areas.
  • The Gore-Tex construction of the X Ultra 4 tends to run warm. If breathability or quick drying is a priority, the non-waterproof version may be a better choice.
  • The roomier fit in the toe box may not be ideal for hikers with narrow feet or those who enjoy a snug, performance-oriented fit.
  • Some users have reported discomfort due to the raised collar. It's important to be aware of this potential issue when trying on the shoes.

Compared to the Competition

The Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX is truly a standout in the hiking shoe market. However, if you're considering other options, here are a few noteworthy comparisons:

  • Salomon's Outpulse GTX is a nimble low-top hiker that offers similar performance to the X Ultra 4 but at a lower weight and cost. However, the X Ultra 4 surpasses the Outpulse in terms of grip, protection, and stiffness.
  • Adidas' Terrex Swift R3 GTX is a worthy competitor to the X Ultra 4, offering impressive protection, traction, and durability. However, the X Ultra 4 provides a more flexible and trail runner-like experience, while still maintaining its toughness and support.
  • Danner's Trail 2650 GTX is a comfortable option that performs well on well-maintained trails. However, the X Ultra 4 offers better stability and versatility at a lower cost.
  • Merrell's Moab 3 WP is a popular hiking shoe known for its comfort. While it's a viable option for easier, on-trail adventures, the X Ultra 4 outperforms it in terms of overall performance, support, and protection.
  • Altra's Lone Peak 7 offers a lightweight and wider fit, making it popular among thru-hikers. However, it lacks the toughness, support, and protection of a dedicated hiking shoe like the X Ultra 4.

With its lightweight design, superior traction, and outstanding stability, it will take you places you've only dreamed of. So gear up, lace up, and let the adventures begin with the Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX by your side. Happy hiking!
