Finding the most comfortable women’s shoes or sneakers can be complicated. Whether you’re looking for women’s dress shoes, flats or ankle booties to wear with casual dresses, or one workout shoes for running, hiking, walking, or training at the gym, there are many factors to consider. Are you susceptible to blisters or painful foot disorders? What’s your foot type? What terrain are you running on? See, the list can go on and on.

In an uncomfortable pair of sneakers, you’re practically in a sweaty foot prison and can endure pain for the long term. “Wearing the wrong shoes may lead to problems such as lowered performance, discomfort such as in plantar fasciitis and runner’s knee, injuries, and even flat feet,” says Dr. Miguel Cunha, founder of Manhattan’s Gotham Footcare and leading New York City podiatrist.

But what is it that defines a shoe as “comfortable” or right for your foot? According to a 2018 study by Scientific Reports, minimal shoes with less cushion can increase the foot muscles and maintain arch stiffness. “People who are habitually barefoot or minimally shod have much lower rates of flat feet than habitually shod populations,” the study says. While minimal or barefoot shoes might be the most healthy option and provide better stability, that doesn’t mean that transitioning from cushioned shoes will be comfortable.

According to the Journal of Foot and Ankle research, finding the “healthiest” and most “comfortable” shoe “is a complex and multifaceted concept that is influenced not only by structural and functional aspects of shoe design, but also by task requirements and anatomical and physiological differences between individuals.” Thus, it’s challenging to draw strong conclusions about the most comfortable shoes for women without understanding more about the disparities between them.

Nonetheless, make sure to switch out your sneakers one to two times per year. “Your shoes will need to be replaced approximately every six months if you are running and approximately 10 months if you are just walking,” Dr. Cunha says. “It doesn’t matter if they still look new; if the support has been worn out, you’re at a much higher risk of injury.” Cunha recommends taking note of the date you buy a new pair of sneakers. “This will help you to keep track of when you’re due for a new pair.”
