Happy new year, AGEIST family! As we step into a new year, let's take a glimpse into the future and explore the style and beauty trends that are set to make waves in 2023. While I don't have a crystal ball, as a former trend forecaster, I can't help but share my predictions with you. So, let's dive in and discover what's on the horizon.

Embracing the '90s Nostalgia

One trend that seems to be making a comeback is the obsession with the look and feel of the '90s. From Dido flipped ends to skinny, highly plucked eyebrows, it's all about channeling that nostalgic vibe. And guess what? Low-waisted jeans and trousers are finally back too! I, for one, am excited to embrace the low-waisted look once again. But let's not go ultra-low, as the silly rabbits say. Ultra-low Miu Miu is for the younger crowd.

As for flipped ends and smoking, well, those are not trends I'm personally keen on. I'd rather experiment with the current French bob and bending the ends for some pluck. And smoking, well, health and wellness are our priorities, and we're far too wise to fall for that. However, I must admit there's a certain schadenfreude in watching the younger ones indulge in these vices.

The Return of Thin Eyebrows and Dark Under-Eyes

But not all '90s trends make a welcome return. Thin eyebrows, or as the TikTok generation calls them, "simulation brows," are making a comeback. As someone who lived through the days when eyebrows were barely seen or heard, I'm not eager to revisit that strange look. Another trend to approach with caution is the dark under-eyes, reminiscent of the "party all night" makeup look. It's time to prioritize looking refreshed over looking wrecked. And as for bleached brows, let's not even go there.

Vintage Renaissance

In the realm of fashion, vintage is enjoying a huge renaissance. Investing in designer pieces like those from Geoffrey Beene, Halston, or Vivienne Westwood can elevate your style and pay homage to the beautiful punk soul of the past. If you're a fan of designer vintage, I highly recommend visiting stores like Mitchell's, where you can immerse yourself in the elegance and history of haute couture.

Classic and Timeless Choices

If trends aren't your cup of tea, fear not. Classic and timeless fashion choices are always in style. A well-cut blazer, great jeans or trousers, and a silk blouse will never fail to impress. Take inspiration from style icons like Stella McCartney, who effortlessly combines a heel, track pants, a tuxedo blazer, and a simple tee for a chic and relaxed look. Athleisure can coexist with sophistication, and it's all about finding the right balance.

A Shift Towards Conscious Consumerism

As we move forward, it's essential to reflect on our consumer habits and embrace conscious consumerism. Small is sexy, and taking baby steps towards sustainable choices will become increasingly important. Let's prioritize harmony, solace, kindness, and compassion over mindless consumption. Remember, excess baggage can weigh us down, both metaphorically and literally.

Trends Beyond Style

Aside from fashion, there are broader trends that will shape the year 2023:

  • Cityfusion: As cities grapple with empty office towers and rising crime rates, will they lose their appeal, or will they become affordable havens for young creatives as the rich seek greener pastures?

  • Entitlelash: The media continues to satirize and vilify the lifestyles of the rich. Are we reaching a breaking point where people yearn for fewer material possessions and more meaningful experiences?

  • Pre-election jitters: With an upcoming election and a divided country, the future is uncertain. Economic worries and political mudslinging will dominate the headlines.

  • Early bird specials: The pandemic has reminded us of the joys of early dining. The appeal of late-night activities might diminish, as we increasingly opt for earlier evenings.

  • Save the humans: As technology advances, there are concerns about the impact of automation on human jobs. However, this could also present an opportunity for us to prioritize a more human approach in our work and interactions.

2023 holds exciting possibilities and challenges. Let's navigate the year with style, consciousness, and compassion. And if you're curious about the divine but dark side of '90s high fashion, I recommend watching the captivating four-part series, "Kingdom of Dreams," which delves into the rise and fall of fashion legends Alexander McQueen, John Galliano, Marc Jacobs, and Tom Ford.
