Introduction

Welcoming a new baby into the family is an exciting time, but it can also come with its fair share of challenges. One of the biggest concerns for parents is how to capture those precious moments between the newborn and their siblings. If you're feeling apprehensive about this, fear not! We've got some fantastic tips to help you create beautiful and memorable newborn photos with siblings.

The "Anything But This" Toddler

During a recent newborn photography session, we encountered a toddler who wanted nothing to do with the photoshoot. Sound familiar? We started off in the nursery, capturing some sweet moments of the girls together and the baby alone. However, things quickly took a turn. The toddler refused to cooperate.

But we didn't let that dampen our spirits. By keeping bunny grahams in my pocket and surprising her with their appearance, we managed to capture one set of everyone together. We also took advantage of the serene moments when one parent handled the tantrums while the other enjoyed some quality time with the baby. Finally, a change of scenery outside worked wonders, and the session ended with big sister enthusiastically declaring, "YEA!"

The Jumping Bean

If you have a little bundle of energy in the family, you know how challenging it can be to get them to sit still for a photo. But here's the secret: embracing their liveliness often leads to more authentic family engagement. During one session, we had a jumping bean of a kid. Instead of trying to make them stay still, we encouraged their silliness and incorporated prompts like "go tell your brother where you're going to jump next!"

For those rare moments when they caught their breath, we placed the baby next to them and gave them fun challenges. From kissing the baby's ear to gently touching their forehead, we captured some heartwarming and tender moments. And by lowering my voice to a whisper, even the rowdiest kids leaned in for some gentler shots.

What Baby?

When there are multiple young siblings involved, a newborn session can become even more interesting. Siblings may show brief interest in the baby, but most of the time, it becomes a competition for parental attention. The good news is, as a photographer, I don't need the siblings to be solely focused on the baby to create beautiful and meaningful photos. What I do need are parents who are willing to play with and show love to their children. And I know that's you!

The Baby Tank and Other Challenges

During one newborn session, the baby spent around 75% of the time nursing. While capturing beautiful photos of that interaction, we also managed to have fun with the older siblings. Guess Who became a part of the session as the baby nursed non-stop. We adapted and rolled with it, resulting in some of the most cherished shots. Despite intermittent cries from the baby, we were able to capture special, intimate, and playful images that truly reflected the family's dynamics.
