To say Tiktok has revolutionized the way fashion trends cycle is an understatement. This fast-paced social media app has brought back looks from nearly a decade ago, and one trend that's making a comeback is colorful tights.

If you grew up during the early 2000s, you probably rocked a pair of colorful tights as a kid. But don’t worry, these have grown with us and look far more chic than they used to - particularly if you’re a fan of the balletcore trend. Can you think of two items that go better than pale tights and ballet flats?

Here’s everything you need to know about tights’ comeback and if it’s worth buying a pair this year.

Are tights in style in 2023?

In a word, yes - but we’re trading our neutrals for brighter and bolder colors this summer. Tights in bold hues were seen on the runway at Valentino, Born in Exile, and Anna Sui’s SS23 shows, while patterned styles were showcased at Sportmax, lace at Victoria Beckham, and floral at Valeninto. The rule is, there are no rules.

But if you’re skeptical about trading your classic black leggings or stockings for vibrant hues, you’re not alone. It took me a while to disassociate colorful tights from something a child would wear. Like any Y2K comeback, it’s all about styling it the right way this time around.

These eye-catching hues can be worn elegantly, as evidenced by the luxury fashion designers who have already incorporated them into their collections.

What’s the ‘no pants’ trend?

Bella Hadid sparked a trend by eating pizza in her underwear; the next thing we knew, more celebrities decided to ditch their trousers. The ‘no pants’ trend does what it says on the tin. Stars are ditching their trousers, wearing either tights or nothing at all with their underwear.

Kendall Jenner posted on Instagram wearing black stockings as trousers, and her sister Kyle recently paired opaque stockings with a sweater. This style of ‘underwear as outerwear’ has become popular, as lingerie-inspired outfits are currently trending.

What styles are trending in 2023?

It’s hard to pinpoint the main theme of this year’s emerging styles because they’re all so different! 2023 is all about being experimental. Get ready for summer sequins, three-dimensional designs, oversized everything, lingerie-inspired garments, and sheer fabrics. There’s also a strong Y2K revival with the comeback of low-rise jeans and cargo pants, so expect baggier and more relaxed silhouettes this year.
