The highly anticipated trial of Atlanta rapper Young Thug has resumed after a temporary delay in December. He is currently on trial alongside five other individuals, with proceedings set to continue on January 22.

'Lifestyle' by Young Thug in the Courtroom

The trial opened with the iconic song "Lifestyle," featuring Young Thug, playing for the court. The rapper's lawyer, Brian Steel, requested to play the music video to demonstrate that Young Thug's style is representative of rappers and not indicative of gang affiliation. However, the request was denied by Fulton County Judge Ural Glanville.

When does the Young Thug trial start?

The Young Thug trial began on November 27, with opening statements from both prosecutors and the rapper's defense. Jury selection took place in January, resulting in a jury composed of 12 individuals and six alternates. Initially, 14 of the 28 individuals indicted were set to be tried together, but this number has since been reduced to six due to plea deals and separate trials.

Why was Young Thug's trial delayed?

The trial experienced a delay due to an incident involving a fight between two individuals in the same part of the jail where Young Thug was being held. As a result, Judge Ural Glanville sent the jurors home until the issue was resolved. The trial was subsequently postponed until January 2.

Duration of the Trial

The trial is expected to last for several months and will likely feature testimony from various high-profile figures in the music industry.

Understanding the Young Thug YSL Case

Young Thug is facing charges related to racketeering, drug offenses, and gun charges, all of which are tied to his alleged involvement with a criminal street gang. According to prosecutors, Young Thug, along with two other individuals, co-founded a gang called Young Slime Life (YSL) in 2012, which they claim is affiliated with the national Bloods gang. Prosecutors argue that Young Thug's songs and social media references contributed to the gang's notoriety.

Young Thug's Potential Prison Time

Young Thug could face five to 20 years in prison for each charge of racketeering conspiracy and gang affiliation. Additionally, the other five charges carry their own potential prison sentences.

Defense Denies YSL Is a Gang

Young Thug's defense team has consistently maintained his innocence and argued that YSL is simply a record label. Furthermore, defense attorneys have criticized the prosecution's use of the RICO statute and anti-gang laws.

Rapper Gunna's Involvement

Rapper Gunna, whose real name is Sergio Kitchens, was initially charged alongside Young Thug with racketeering conspiracy. Gunna entered an Alford plea, maintaining his innocence while acknowledging that pleading guilty is in his best interest. During Gunna's plea hearing, it was stated that YSL is both a music label and a gang, and Gunna had knowledge of criminal activities connected to the gang.
